Finally, teens get to play along, too!
It's about time! There is a new book award, one that will be voted on by the teens of Illinois!
The Abraham Lincoln Award will be given to a book for K-3rd graders each year. Like the the Monarch Award (children in grades K through 3) and the Rebecca Caudill Award (which is for grades 4 through 8), the Abraham Lincoln Award will be chosen by a vote of readers, this time in grades 9 through 12.
The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois' most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author. This Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction and become familiar with authors of young adult books.
The nominees for the first ever Abraham Lincoln Award are:
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison
Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn
Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes
A Child Called It: One Child's Courage to Survive by Dave Pelzer
Cut by Patricia McCormick
Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Hanging On To Max by Margaret Bechard
Imani All Mine by Connie Rose Porter
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
The Lovely Bones: a Novel by Alice Sebold
Monster by Walter Dean Myers
Sabriel by Garth Nix
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Soldier's Heart: Being the Story of the Enlistment and Due Service of the Boy Charley Goddard in the First Minnesota Volunteers by Gary Paulsen
Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Squared Circle by Jay Bennett
Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman
Year of Wonders: a Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks
The Grande Prairie Library owns most of the nominated books. We have ordered extra copies of those that are currently in the adult collection so that all of them will be available with the Teen (Young Adult) books.
Happy Reading!
